In an exciting development, Apple is poised to launch a budget-friendly MacBook aimed at directly competing with Google’s Chromebooks in the education sector. This upcoming MacBook model is expected to come with a significantly lower price tag compared to Apple’s existing laptops, and it’s set to make its debut in the latter half of 2024. Apple is strategically targeting the unique requirements of the education sector and aiming to counter the widespread popularity of Google’s Chromebooks.

According to a report from DigiTimes, Apple is gearing up to introduce a brand-new product line designed to offer more cost-effective versions of its MacBook Air and Pro models. While the external design of the laptop may still feature Apple’s signature metal casing, it’s likely to be constructed using different materials. This shift in materials will allow Apple to lower the production costs of mechanical components, making it possible to offer an education-focused, budget-friendly device that can effectively compete with Chromebooks.

However, the tentative launch date for this new MacBook is set for the second half of 2024. This timeline is due to the fact that major Apple suppliers, such as Quanta Computer and Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn), have not yet indicated any signs of related production activities.

Chromebooks have experienced significant success in the education sector, with shipments surging to 33.5 million units in 2021, a substantial increase from 13.9 million units in 2019.

Nevertheless, experts believe that Apple might face considerable challenges in the battle against Chromebooks. Typically, a MacBook comes with a price tag of around $999, while Chromebooks are available in a much lower price range, averaging around $200. Furthermore, the education sector has embraced a well-established ecosystem of Google services and Chromebooks, presenting a formidable barrier to the entry of competing operating systems like macOS or Windows.

In the meantime, Apple enthusiasts can look forward to the company’s annual September event, where the tech giant is expected to unveil its iPhone 15 lineup. This exciting lineup includes the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. While there’s anticipation surrounding the launch of the Apple Watch Series 9, there haven’t been any mentions of an Apple Watch Ultra or Apple Watch SE for this year’s event.
